ALMA operates at wavelengths of 0.32 to 3.6 mm, about one thousand times longer than visible light. Radiation in these wavelengths open a window into the cold Universe. However, the Earth's atmosphere contains water vapour which absorb signals from space. This is why ALMA is built at the 5000-m high and dry Chajnantor plateau in the Atacama Desert, Antofata Region, Chile.
